Green Lantern Movie HeroClix

Last year I picked up a starter set for the HeroClix game. The gameplay is entirely addictive. The rules have such depth that it makes Chess seem like stacking sticks. I am thrilled to hear that Wizkids is released a Green Lantern set that ties in with the movie. The sculpts of these look really great. Tomar-Re's orange blend on the chest is a nice touch for a set off from the comic version.

Party With The Corps

Birthday Direct now has a Green Lantern section to browse on their site. There are some new images in the section and a few are familiar from the past few days of promo art that's been released. All the items are affordable so I can decorate my house with all the goodies. My personal favorite is the Green Lantern table cover pictured above.

The Guardians

The Guardians of the Universe have been revealed in t-shirt from from Urban Collector. I would link the page but it seems to have been removed. All I'm getting is a blank white page with the site's banner and side links but no image of the shirt.

Luckily Daily Blam has this image up so we can still get a good look at the Guardians. From concept art leaked out last year they look very similar with only moderate changes. Notice the long robes and keep in mind that this could be to conceal their true size until a big reveal later in the movie.

My guess for these three would be Ganthet in center, Sayd on his right and Appa Ali Apsa to his left.

For those unfamiliar with these blue originator's of the Corps here's a quick bio from ComicVine:

An immortal race as ancient as life itself, the benevolent Guardians of the Universe desire a peaceful, orderly existence for all living beings, as well the pursuit of their own enigmatic agendas. They never allow emotions to infect their thoughts and actions. The Guardians created the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar police force that now patrols the universe's 3600 space sectors

Official Green Lantern Products

I get all excited for any images being released that involve the upcoming Green Lantern film but I'm beginning to tire of toy pictures and coloring books. Don't get me wrong, most of these products will find a nice home in my residence when they're released.  I'm starting to wonder if WB will release any more official photos or even another trailer before the movie hits in June. This is just impatience on my part because it is still very early to give away too much and in the coming months the net will get bombarded with plenty of goodies to sink our eyes into. You can check more photos of the products over at Blog of Oa and read the official press release below. I'm personally looking forward to what Noble Collection is going to offer.

Along with the release of the “Green Lantern” film, global licensee Mattel will debut an out-of-this-world toy line, including the Green Lantern Ring Blast™ Jet Figure & Vehicle, the Green Lantern Battle Shifters™ Figures, and the Green Lantern Movie Masters® Figures, as well as engaging role-play items including the Green Lantern Colossal Cannon™ Blaster.  A rich and comprehensive line of products based on the film for both kids and adult fans alike, Mattel’s multi-category toy line includes Basic and Deluxe Action Figures, Figure/Vehicles and Role Play, along with Playsets, Games, Puzzles and Vehicles.  Additionally, each Basic Action Figure comes complete with a Green Lantern ring in order for kids to feel as if they, too, have been “chosen” to be a Green Lantern.

Additional key licensees include Rubies, with a line of Green Lantern costumes and costume accessories; the Noble Collection, offering high-end ring and lantern prop replicas; and NECA, with a Green Lantern Projection Ring and other accessories.  Licensees also supporting Green Lantern include: Pressman Toy, Hewlett-Packard, Funko, Horizon Group USA, Hy-Ko Products, Kidz Toyz, LPG International, Mezco Toyz, SRM Entertainment, Toy Factory, Trend Setters Ltd, Formation Marketing Canada Ltd. and University Games.

James Newton Howard Set To Compose Green Lantern

Green Lantern finally has a composer named and it couldn't be a better choice. Film Music Reporter has revealed that James Newton Howard will be giving the GL world its soundtrack. He's most widely known for his work with Hans Zimmer on the score's for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. He worked with director Martin Campbell in 2000's Vertical Limit so this will be a reunion for the two.

His work also includes some pretty notable films; Signs, Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, King Kong, I Am Legend and oddly enough The Green Hornet.

I can't wait to hear what he comes up with during our first scenes on Oa. Green Lantern hits theatres in 2D and 3D on June 17th.

No Superbowl For Green Lantern

The image above is from the Green Lantern movie. I'm guessing the first thing you notice is the circular set piece that Hector Hammond is standing in front of. For the sake of this article, let's say that's the Superbowl. Now I'll give you a list of the movies that have purchased spots during the mega event;

Pre-Game Spots:

Battle: Los Angeles (Sony)
The Eagle (Focus)
Just Go With It (Sony)
Kung Fu Panda 2 (Paramount)
Priest (Sony)

Game Spots:

Captain America: The First Avenger (Paramount)
Cowboys & Aliens (Universal)
Limitless (Relativity)
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney)
Rango (Paramount)
Super 8 (Paramount)
Thor (Paramount)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Paramount)

Post-Game Spots:

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (Paramount)
Take Me Home Tonight (Relativity)

Now that you're back, did you notice the correlation between the list and the image? That's right, Green Lantern is missing in both.

I've never been involved in marketing in anyway, but it seems like having a spot during the biggest sports event of the year is a no brainer. Just about everyone will be tuning in to watch the Superbowl, so what better place to advertise your product than in front of an audience that large? It looks like every major film for the summer has a spot in these commercials, give or take a few. It's unfortunate Green Lantern falls into that category of the missing.

WB is notorious for this though. There's not even one film on that list with Warner Bros. name attached to it. If my memory is correct The Dark Knight and Superman Returns didn't have Superbowl spots either. I don't think a Superbowl spot would have really changed the outcome of either of those films but it gives me the impression that WB isn't quite on their marketing aspects the way they need to be.

More than any other of their comic related properties at this point, Green Lantern needs as much publicity as they can pump out to the masses. There is already a negative buzz following the movie around with complaints about the CGI suit and just recently the remarks from one of Blake Lively's representatives stating that "Green Lantern is supposed to be terrible." This person likely had their head up their ass but the fact is that this article hit a lot of sites. People visiting these sites may read this article and immediately shut off any interest they had for it.

There is still hope for a Green Lantern spot to air during the Superbowl. I could be getting worked up for no reason as WB sits on a glorious set of scenes to give us on February 6th. My guess is that open spots are running thin and that's also a cause for concern. If no official announcement is made by the day of, I'll watch the Superbowl in anticipation that it will show up as a surprise gift to all the GL fans. Until then I have this to say to WB; your promotional posters for Green Lantern state that anyone can be chosen, so chose the Superbowl and your fans for the release of new footage.

Grant Major On Green Lantern Character Designs

Being able to design all the different members of the Green Lantern Corps is probably the coolest and most tedious job involved with the movie. You have to create something from scratch that hordes of fans love while making it look fresh and original to the general public. In the latest issue of Toyfare magazine Production Designer Grant Major talks about the task of creating these beloved characters:

"It's a challenge to come up with stuff that's new, and I tried not to look at too much science fiction artwork, because you can end up channeling that without even realizing it. So the source of most of our ideas came from nature, in terms of the creatures we produced -- looking at the more bizarre kind of environments and aspects on the Earth. Like deep-sea things, and places that have these extraordinary primal things going on.

"We'd just cruise around looking for inspiration and pictures, and you'd think, 'Well, what if this place is just kind of all fibrous and broken like a broken tree?' Of course you have to keep it in the bounds of believability, so the audience has to recognize the places as being real, and they have to have something to hook onto."

Daily Blam has a few more excerpts from the article.

The Great Hornet/Lantern Debate

The very lovely and always seductive Peter Georgiou of Think McFly Think wrote a nice article comparing Hornet and Lantern. He mentioned how having two green superheroes in the same year could end up causing confusion amongst casual movie goers and gave the edge to our boy Green Lantern.

I am on that side of the fence as well. Green Hornet seems like your general superhero action flick with its box office relying on Seth Rogens goofy and oaf like loveablity. This may come of as being biased but my opinion is that Green Lantern offers a fresh take on what most people view a comic book film to be. There is a huge scope with Hal Jordan being only one of 7,200 officers that police the entire universe. He ends up being chosen to be a hero rather than don a costume because his mommy or daddy died and he couldn't get over it.

Now that you have opinions of the two writers from Coast City, I'll pass along one from someone that isn't particularly leaning towards either film. I noticed an article today by Chris Hyatt discussing the potential of what might happen with these two green themed movies being released in the same year. Take a moment to read his article over at It's Just Movies.

Green Lantern Figure Updates From ToyFare

Excluding our own wonderful Coast City site, Blog of Oa is probably my favorite place to visit for all the latest Green Lantern happenings. Whether it be comics, movies, toys, or games they always deliver the goods. Yet again they fail to disappoint with updates about action figures based on the film.

The ToyFare issue holding all the Lantern action figure information was meant to be released last week but unfortunately was delayed. Better one week late than never though as we finally get a glimpse of what's inside.

There are going to be a lot of really great products coming out for this film for collectors to get their hands on. Most retail stores will carry the same figures but there will be some exclusive for Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us. There is clarification on that Hal Jordan pre-order from Toys R Us which was recently canceled and we can expect it on March 1st. My favorite mention on that is the ring included is die-cast and not plastic.

All figures will be released on May 1st to get everyone primed and ready for a unique and fresh experience for the comic book film genre. Head over to Blog of Oa to check out the full details and images.

Are Hector And Hal BFF?

Cinemateaser has a new image from the upcoming Green Lantern flick. I'm not salivating over this one but it's cool to get any new stuff to keep the excitement level up. Is Hal insulting Hector here? The smug look on Hector's face leaves me believing some sort of unfriendly words are being traded between the two. If you've been lucky enough to read one of the script leaks from a while back then you may know exactly what's about to happen in this scene.

Green Lantern hits theatres June 17th and this one might be worth the 3D admission price.
