There Is Potential For A Green Lantern Sequel

Green Lantern still has a lengthy run left in the theatres, as well as new openings in other countries, but for it's first two weeks in theatres the movie has turned out considerably disappointing results. With an under performing opening weekend to a drop off of %66 this past weekend, sequel talk would seem to be the last thing on anyone's mind at Warner Bros.
It's very unlikely at this point that the company will make back it's money with a reported budget of over $300 million including marketing. The Hollywood Reporter has mention of sources saying that Warner Bros. still believes the character to have franchise potential even though they are "somewhat disappointed" with it's performance so far. As the article mentions, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is released in theatres this week which will cause an even larger blow to the already waning movie.
Green Lantern is still in its infancy in theatres with some markets waiting for the release so anything is possible until the run ends. Strong home video sales could also persuade WB to go forward with a sequel if any doubts remain from it's box office performance. It wasn't too long ago that the Batman franchise was in the dump and high DVD sales gave the company enough faith in the product to green light a sequel. Hopefully something will keep the green flame going because it would be very disappointing to get a one and done with such a great character.

This movie would have benefited from having it open in all markets at the same time. I thought the film was pretty good and was pleasantly surprised considering the lashing it got from critics. I doubt home video sales will save this one though, it had to break even to really have a fighting chance. I just hope they have some deleted scenes in the dvd release.
