Emerald Knights Performs Well On Home Video Market

While the live-action Green Lantern movie has nothing to boast for its performance in the eye of the general public, all light hasn't burned out. World's Finest has some very uplifting information on the sales of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Let's hope that the strong outing from the animated feature shows that people are indeed interested in Green Lantern in formats other than the silver screen adaptation.

According to various home media retailing outlets and independent research, the new Green Lantern: Emerald Knights direct-to-video animated feature performed very well on the home video market. The latest DC Universe Animated Original Movie title moved over 230,000 units in its first week, with 101,000 of those sales coming from DVD and 129,000 from the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray sales accounted for 56% of total Green Lantern: Emerald Knights home video sales. In terms of chart placement, the animated feature hit #3 on respective Blu-ray and combined DVD/Blu-ray charts, and placed #7 on the DVD sales chart. These sales numbers are for the week ending June 12th, 2011. Keep in mind the sales numbers above do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers, or legal download numbers.

The increase in Blu-ray sales for this DC Universe Animated Original Movie title over its DVD counterpart is not a surprise, given the lack of regularly available Two-Disc Special Edition DVD release for
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

To compare, the previous "DC Universe Animated Original Movie" title
All-Star Superman debuted with an estimated 187,000 copies sold on DVD and Blu-ray editions sold during its debut week in February 2011.

Above is the cover art for all three separate home video releases for the direct-to-video
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights animated feature. Green Lantern: Emerald Knights animated feature is now available to own on Blu-ray disc and DVD from Warner Home Video. Click on the links below to discuss both the new Green Lantern: Emerald Knights animated feature and its respective DVD and Blu-ray home video releases.

Green Lantern #1 Cover Reveals A Lantern Returned

The Source, DC Comics' official blog, revealed the cover to the relaunched Green Lantern title coming this September and it's an interesting image to say the least. The greatest Green Lantern of all makes his return to the Corps or at least that's what we're being led to believe.

With the release of Green Lantern #67 today, it marked the end of the War of the Green Lantern storyline and sets up the image you see above. Sinestro was welcomed back to the Corps as a ring found its way to his finger without the initiation from a deceased Mogo. By the end of the issue the Guardians declared Hal Jordan as the most dangerous Green Lantern and discharged him from the Corps, leaving him stranded in a desert like area on Earth.

DC has my full attention after releasing this image and the events of War of the Green Lanterns. Things are going to be very interesting in the coming months.

There Is Potential For A Green Lantern Sequel

Green Lantern still has a lengthy run left in the theatres, as well as new openings in other countries, but for it's first two weeks in theatres the movie has turned out considerably disappointing results. With an under performing opening weekend to a drop off of %66 this past weekend, sequel talk would seem to be the last thing on anyone's mind at Warner Bros.

It's very unlikely at this point that the company will make back it's money with a reported budget of over $300 million including marketing. The Hollywood Reporter has mention of sources saying that Warner Bros. still believes the character to have franchise potential even though they are "somewhat disappointed" with it's performance so far. As the article mentions, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is released in theatres this week which will cause an even larger blow to the already waning movie.

Green Lantern is still in its infancy in theatres with some markets waiting for the release so anything is possible until the run ends. Strong home video sales could also persuade WB to go forward with a sequel if any doubts remain from it's box office performance. It wasn't too long ago that the Batman franchise was in the dump and high DVD sales gave the company enough faith in the product to green light a sequel. Hopefully something will keep the green flame going because it would be very disappointing to get a one and done with such a great character.

New Image From Upcoming Green Lantern Animated Series

With the Green Lantern movie dropping %66 this weekend at the box office, fans need a little something to be encouraged by. Warner Bros. released the new image above from the upcoming animated series that will air on Cartoon Network. Below is information for the San Diego Comic Con Panel showcasing the series.

Warner Bros. Animation brings the Green Lantern to television in an all-new CG animated action series for Cartoon Network from world-renowned producer, artist and animator Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series). Based upon the DC Comics super hero, Green Lantern: The Animated Series centers on Hal Jordan and his partner Kilowog who find themselves alone on the edge of the Guardian Frontier fighting off an invasion by the deadly Red Lantern Corps. Timm will headline a panel — moderated by Warner Bros. Animation’s Sam Register (Teen Titans) — which will also feature producer Giancarlo Volpe (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and producer/story editor Jim Krieg (Ben 10: Alien Swarm). In addition to the Q and A, fans in attendance will be treated to footage of this highly anticipated new series prepared exclusively for Comic-Con. Don’t miss out, or you’ll be waiting ’til 2012.

Green Lantern Opens To A Strong But Disappointing Box Office

Green Lantern has made it's way into theatres in the domestic market now, with a world wide release still coming later in the year and although the movie opened up to a very strong $53.2 million, you can't help but believe that Warner Bros. was expecting much more than this.

Early predictions had it landing around the $60 million mark and if I had to guess, the studio was expecting something around $75 to $80. Bad word of mouth will no doubt be credited to the underwhelming performance because the film was marketed to general audiences plenty and with it opening on Father's Day weekend there's really no other excuse.

Now all fans of the character are left with suspicions of what comes next as Warner Bros. has kept silent on the topic. There was talk of a script for a sequel already in the working stages with high confidence that the movie would be a solid start to a potential franchise. Nothing but questions will remain until Warner breaks its silence.

On a side note, I saw the film again this past Saturday with my wife again and tagging along with us was her brother and two other friends. He is an avid comic book fan but not particularly a Green Lantern lover or hater so I wanted to get his opinion to let all of you get an unbiased view and one other than my own.

"Let me start by saying that I have only read a couple Green Lantern comics, but I have a fairly good understanding of the basics and the origin of Green Lantern. I really have no attachment to the series so I'm here to tell you that not only fans will enjoy the movie.

It's a very good representation of a comic book, but in some parts of the movie it's too much like a comic book. It feels rushed, almost like they cut pieces of the movie out to make a shorter run time. I caught myself wanting more explanation in a good amount of scenes. This can be forgiven in a comic book because they are limited in the ways they can explain things, but in a movie I expect everything that needs to be told to be brought up front without you trying to figure out what's going on. It becomes distracting.

Now this does not mean that I disliked the movie. That was really the only downside to the film other than Hector Hammond, who at times gets a little old and you find yourself longing for Parallax to return to the screen. It is full of action and good action at that.

The constructs are so creative! Sometimes they can be a bit cheesy, but it's still so much fun. Ryan Reynold's performance was surprisingly good. I say surprising because based on the trailer it looked like nothing was going to be taken seriously. There are parts where he jokes around but it's done well." - Daniel Howard

Green Lantern Review

Negativity began to swirl around Green Lantern earlier today as the reviews found their way online. I usually don't pay attention to what critic's have to say on any film because a movie should be judged with a person's own opinion. Worry began to set in my mind as each review seemed to have nothing but bad things to say about this character that I love so much.

Leading up to the film, my expectations were high and they lowered considerably after all the comments on what a terrible movie this turned out to be. I'm glad that whatever those people saw, I missed out on. This was one of the most fun experiences watching a film in the theatre for me.

My viewing of Green Lantern was supposed to be in the regular 2D format but right before the screen came on it was announced that the wrong film was sent and we would be getting the 3D version. This movie was post-converted into 3D and that usually spells doom. I can gladly say that Green Lantern boasted bright colors and extraordinary depth which was a welcomed surprise to all the murky, dark conversions that generally plague cinemas. Now onto the movie.

It started off with an introduction of the Green Lantern universe which was basically the same thing that was shown in the 3D trailer. After that, the action began and never slowed down from the opening sequence. There were plenty of strong points to this film; Reynolds as Hal, Lively as Carol, Strong as Sinestro, and enough action to keep most fans pleased. I found the humor to be more witty than comedic. A lot of speculation leading into the movie was that Ryan Reynolds would just be playing himself in the role but in my opinion he toned down his usual schtick and gave a performance of great wit. He took the serious face when the situation called for it, and made me enjoy Hal Jordan more than I ever have when reading the Green Lantern series. Reynolds brought such a strong personality to the character who was every bit of the word "cocky" and found a way to be charming through it all.

Blake Lively as Carol Ferris has one of the strongest female performances in any comic related film yet. There is believability to her possibly running Ferris Air when she puts Hal in his place more than once. The chemistry between Lively and Reynolds is another positive to this film. It honestly feels like these two have known each other since age seven and you can sense the tension after all the years and the love they have in the intimate moments. Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond was hit and miss for me. At times he came off as creepy and scary then he would turn out a bit of ham with a very comical villain routine. He certainly nailed the extremely awkward personality before he made the turn into the oversized cranium braniac.

Warner Bros. spent a lot of extra money when fans caused an uproar about the shoddy CGI work in the first trailer. As far as I'm concerned that was money well spent. From the general landscape of Oa to the character renderings of Tomar-Re and Kilowog this movie looks fantastic. The opening sequence with Abin Sur looks fantastic and really causes a strong sense of urgency for what lies ahead. Tomar-Re is probably the finest bit of all the CGI in the movie. His movements and general details to his body are outstanding. I had a few concerns with the look of Kilowog when I watched that footage with Michael Clarke Duncan on G4 but there are no complaints after seeing the finished product. The constructs played out even better than I imagined they would as well, very creative!

Now that I've praised the movie for a bit I'll bring you to what I thought were the problems. Mark Strong as Sinestro. No, not his performance because that is possibly the highest point of the movie for me. He's commanding of your attention every moment he makes an appearance on screen. The downside is that he isn't on quite enough. Which is my biggest gripe with the entire film. It's a bit of a contradiction here that the movie is on such a fast pace and is action packed from beginning to end but it also causes moments to be rushed, feeling like we just didn't get enough time for things to develop properly. As soon as I really get invested into a scene they cut away from it leaving me wishing it was longer. We see very little of Tomar-Re, Killowog, Sinestro. The other members of the Corps which are pretty much "blink and you miss it" appearances. Most scenes in the film happen so fast and cut away with little explanation that it leaves the viewer to sort of fill in the blanks of what went down between scenes.

Even with that little bump of the film feeling rushed at times, it doesn't bring down the overall experience I had while watching it. In an odd way I am left wanting more, in a positive light, that I hope a potential sequel fills my appetite for what I received with this first installment. My review obviously doesn't agree with a majority of what the other critic's had to say but it's my honest opinion after this first viewing. Call me a fanboy with bad taste in movies if you want because as I said before this may be the most fun I've had while watching a comic related film.

P.S. - Stay after the credits for an additional scene. You're not going to want to miss this. Extreme geek mode will set in.

If you have any questions I didn't address here, or any comments you'd like to contribute, feel free to let me know in the comments section. Thanks for reading! - Matt

Critic Quotes Green Lantern TV Spot

This one has been out for a few days but someone finally has it on Youtube in high quality. Good comments so far and the embargo on reviews of the film officially lifts this Wednesday. I'll be checking it out on the 15th so come back here around 11:30 PM Eastern time for my quick opinion and then Thursday for a more in depth review.
