No Superbowl For Green Lantern

The image above is from the Green Lantern movie. I'm guessing the first thing you notice is the circular set piece that Hector Hammond is standing in front of. For the sake of this article, let's say that's the Superbowl. Now I'll give you a list of the movies that have purchased spots during the mega event;

Pre-Game Spots:

Battle: Los Angeles (Sony)
The Eagle (Focus)
Just Go With It (Sony)
Kung Fu Panda 2 (Paramount)
Priest (Sony)

Game Spots:

Captain America: The First Avenger (Paramount)
Cowboys & Aliens (Universal)
Limitless (Relativity)
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney)
Rango (Paramount)
Super 8 (Paramount)
Thor (Paramount)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Paramount)

Post-Game Spots:

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (Paramount)
Take Me Home Tonight (Relativity)

Now that you're back, did you notice the correlation between the list and the image? That's right, Green Lantern is missing in both.

I've never been involved in marketing in anyway, but it seems like having a spot during the biggest sports event of the year is a no brainer. Just about everyone will be tuning in to watch the Superbowl, so what better place to advertise your product than in front of an audience that large? It looks like every major film for the summer has a spot in these commercials, give or take a few. It's unfortunate Green Lantern falls into that category of the missing.

WB is notorious for this though. There's not even one film on that list with Warner Bros. name attached to it. If my memory is correct The Dark Knight and Superman Returns didn't have Superbowl spots either. I don't think a Superbowl spot would have really changed the outcome of either of those films but it gives me the impression that WB isn't quite on their marketing aspects the way they need to be.

More than any other of their comic related properties at this point, Green Lantern needs as much publicity as they can pump out to the masses. There is already a negative buzz following the movie around with complaints about the CGI suit and just recently the remarks from one of Blake Lively's representatives stating that "Green Lantern is supposed to be terrible." This person likely had their head up their ass but the fact is that this article hit a lot of sites. People visiting these sites may read this article and immediately shut off any interest they had for it.

There is still hope for a Green Lantern spot to air during the Superbowl. I could be getting worked up for no reason as WB sits on a glorious set of scenes to give us on February 6th. My guess is that open spots are running thin and that's also a cause for concern. If no official announcement is made by the day of, I'll watch the Superbowl in anticipation that it will show up as a surprise gift to all the GL fans. Until then I have this to say to WB; your promotional posters for Green Lantern state that anyone can be chosen, so chose the Superbowl and your fans for the release of new footage.
